Shiro Vasti is a powerful and specialized Ayurvedic head treatment where warm medicated oil is retained on the head inside a specially designed leather or herbal dough cap. The word Shiro means head, and Vasti means retaining—so this is literally “retaining oil on the head.” It is more intense than Shirodhara and is typically recommended for serious neurological and psychological issues.
How Shiro Vasti Is Done:
- Cap Placement: A cylindrical, leak-proof cap (traditionally made of leather or herbal paste) is fitted around the head, about 4–5 inches high.
- Oil Pouring: Warm medicated oil (like Brahmi Taila, Ksheerabala Taila, Chandanadi Taila) is gently poured into the cap, covering the scalp.
- Retention Time: The oil is kept on the head for about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the condition and body type (dosha).
- Removal & Massage: After the treatment, the oil is removed and the head is gently massaged, followed by rest.
